REACHING THE BOILING POINT

More than 600.000 Venezuelans have walked thousands of miles to be able to cross the frontier to Colombia. The Red Cross in Colombia informed that they are on the breach of having received 1 million Venezuelans, who often travel without any luggage, money or a place to stay. A young Venezuelan informed NTN24 (online news channel) that he traveled miles in different busses until he was robbed of his money, bag and shoes. Still, he decided to walk the rest of the hundred miles shoeless because “staying would have been worst”.

About 4,5 million Venezuelans have left the country because of the precarious situation. Many national newspapers assure the number of kids dying of hunger can be compared to war casualties. Dollar Today, one of the few online news channels in Venezuela declared that one child a day dies of starvation. That according to numbers given by official and national sources, that have proven to feed false information to the media for years.

The humanitarian crisis has brought hunger and death.  Dying because of the common flu has become a common cause of death because of the lack of medicines and the scarcity of basic need products. The situation is turning worst with every passing day. A member of the foundation “I Love Venezuela” declared that mothers are making their own diapers with plastic bags and duck tape. International media who try to report on the situation, like the New York Times recently, are ripped off of their equipment and deported with a threat of arrest upon return.

Countries in the Latin American community have solidarized with the problem and are helping the people move while the crisis lasts. Venezuelans also received help from the international community. The ONU recently announced that the Venezuelan situation should be considered as a humanitarian crisis and encouraged the nations affiliated with the organization to treat its citizens as asylum seekers and to not return them to their country.

“OPEN THE FRONTIERS”

Millions pleaded for Colombian officials to reopen the frontiers. Because of the Colombian elections, national officials ordered the closing of the frontiers until the end of the electoral process. Thereafter the  frontiers were successfully reopened and the Colombian Red Cross confirmed that the flow of fleeing Venezuelans keeps raising exponentially.

ELECTORAL BOYCOTT

As the parliamentary and presidential elections approach the situation becomes even worse.  Because of all the unconstitutional actions taken by the president, the opposition has decided to boycott this “fake elections by not participating  in them. The voter turnout should showcase the majority’s opinion”.
