One of science’s brightest stars died yesterday at age 76. The British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking, who overcame a debilitating disease has died. Astronomer, mathematician, and author of many books was considered one of the greatest scientist of all mankind. His publication of “A Brief History of Time” sold more than 10million copies around the world.
Hawking suffered from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, a neurodegenerative diseased that many doctors assured would kill him within a few years after his diagnosis at age 21. The disease left him on a wheelchair, paralyzed and completely dependent on others or on technology, even for speech for which he used a machine that allowed him to speak through a computerized voice with an American accent. His life and accomplishments were showcased a few years ago by the movie “The Theory of Everything”.
